Vaginal atrophy is when the vaginal tissue shrinks, making intimate skin feel dry, itchy and stuck together. Vaginal atrophy is caused by a drop in estrogen during perimenopause and menopause. As our estrogen levels drop, so do our collagen levels, and this is the substance that makes skin feel plump and hydrated.

All women will experience vaginal atrophy during the stages of menopause, to some degree. For some, intimate skin can feel really uncomfortable, particularly during intercourse and physical activity. Others may not notice symptoms too much.
